What a crazy few weeks. I am so sorry it took me so long to get this newsletter out! Way too much travel, including the Nash Yarn Festival in Nashville, a trip to beautiful Asheville, NC to attend the Dean and Bean’s Sock Machine Crank-in, and of course H&H in Chicago! We continue working hard to bring you all the best of the best and traveling to find new classes and vendors is just one way we do this.
We are working on the final details for the Peaceful Making Society and hope to introduce it to all our customers within the next two weeks. For more information on the many benefits that membership in the Peaceful Making Society brings, please continue reading.
Jenna and Helen led our trip to Nash Yarn Festival with Kathy, Tammy, Carol, Rosemary and Denise in Nashville, TN. This was the second annual Nash Yarn Fest, sponsored by Modern Day Knitting (MDK). The weekend’s events included the Tailgate Knit Night on Thursday evening (hosted by Twice Sheared Sheep and GoSadi); the Nash Fest Hootenanny on Friday evening; and two days at the Nashville Fairgrounds exploring limitless choices of yarn and other making supplies offered by more than 90 vendors. A performance at the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday evening capped off the weekend.
Peaceful Making was well-represented at the Dean and Bean’s Sock Machines fifth annual Crank-In in Asheville from April 24th to the 26th. We spent two productive days learning the basics of machine sock knitting, and Katie made us proud by completing a sock on the machine! While we were in Asheville, we bought four Dean and Bean’s sock machines for the store. The Dean and Bean’s family was delightful, patient, and encouraging, and I am thrilled that they have accepted an invitation to join us on the Outer Banks in the fall. Stay tuned to this space and the website for more information about their visit.
Jenna and Katie headed out to the H&H Retail conference in Chicago. They attended classes, visited with many of our current vendors, and secured many more vendors for our store. This was a wonderful opportunity to learn and become a part of the fiber community! Thanks Katie and Jenna for attending for us!
Peaceful Making Family Grows!
Welcome to the newest members of the Peaceful Making Community—our four new interns from North Carolina State University in Raleigh. Edie is a rising Senior at the NC State, Wilson School of Textiles with a Major in Fashion and Textile Design with a minor in Textile Technology. She has experience in weaving, knitting, crochet, dying, felting, and spinning.
Isabelle is a rising Senior at the NC State, Wilson School of Textiles with a Major in Textile Engineering and Minors in Materials Science and Engineering as well as Music. Isabelle has more experience in the technical side of fiber arts, but also in leadership as well.
Please help us welcome them to the Peaceful Making Family!
WOWOWOW - we pushed past our goal with Knit for Food! On April 11, the Peaceful Making team raised over $5,200 in support of Feeding America, World Central Kitchen, No Kid Hungry, and Meals on Wheels. We gathered for twelve hours that day to knit, enjoy each other’s company, and host our own local Zoom call for those of our community who couldn’t attend. We also linked with the nationwide Zoom call held by Laura Nelkin and the other organizers of Knit-for-Food throughout the day. Many thanks to all the members of our community whose generosity made this year’s Knit for Food such a success!!

I am excited to begin a Tolsta Tee knit-along this month that will run through June. The Tolsta Tee, designed by Rebecca Clow (also known as the Creabea) is an extremely popular top-down pattern, and Rebecca provides many options and modifications in different yarn weights to enhance this simple tee. Our knit-along will be for the DK version, and the pattern will be available for purchase through Ravelry here at the store. We have an unlimited selection of yarn that will make your Tolsta Tee a unique and special addition to your wardrobe, and we’d be happy to help you find the yarns that will work best for you.

Welcome to the Making Lab. We have put together a comprehensive collection of making machines and looms upstairs.
We now have a wonderful collection of flat bed knitting machines. We have Brothers, Toyotas, Studio Knits, and Silver Reeds. We have all gauges—standard, lace, and bulky. We also have added two engines for those who want a hands-off experience (well not really :)). We will be doing maintenance on all the machines and putting together entry level classes to knitting machines, and you will be able to schedule lab time to use the machines after you complete the 101 class.
Our new Sock Machine Lab has six machines: two Erlbachers and four Dean and Bean’s sock machines. We will be working towards offering a 101 class that will be a requirement for further booking time with these machines, giving you machines to practice on in preparation for the Dean and Bean Crank-in this fall.
Inger has set up her wonderful loom in the making lab. The loom was built in a prison but is a copy of a typical Finnish loom, the same as Toika or Varpapuu. She dressed the loom for anyone to weave on with a polyester warp and wool weft in a rose path threading. People can play on it. The fabric can be used for a pillow, bag or wallhanging.
The weaving lab also has a large selection of rigid heddle looms and wolf pups in our lab ready for weaving and a lovely Schacht Standard Loom, warped and ready for weaving. The lab also has tapestry looms and tapestry weaving classes. For those just beginning and would like to learn the basics of weaving on a smaller scale on a small loom you can take home, consider signing up for the bookmark loom class.
We will be releasing a series of weaving classes this week that Inger will be teaching as well as continuing to offer Open Weave on Saturday afternoons with Inger (come weave on her interesting loom!). Here is the link to our weaving class section so you can sign up! Remember all classes are included in our Peaceful Making Society Memberships. Here is a link to sign up for that.
Are you interested in a loom or a wheel? We are a dealer for all of the major loom/wheel/fiber brands. We have some in stock or can order anything you may want with fast delivery to either the store or drop shipped to you. Check out the website or let us know if you need something that is not listed and we will get it for you. Feel free to make an appointment with Mischel to do an in-store or virtual weaving or spinning shopping experience! Call the store to make an appointment!

All three of my FO’s this newsletter did not bubble up from my WIPs - they are total distraction knits that I just had a whim and knit. Sometimes it’s not about planning, stash or WIPs - it’s about the love of knitting.
MK’s Ribbon Shawl - This beautiful shawl came out of playing with the flatbed machine and the beautiful coned ribbon yarn we got at the Hidden Yarn Shop HM Nabavian in NYC. It was a quick machine knit with a hand knit icord finish. I love it - and it looks great with Sydney’s sweater in the store! Check it out!
Early Bloomer - Heidi Kirrmaier - This lovely short sleeve colorwork sweater came out of a yarn chicken loss. I was knitting the Sweater No 28 by My Favorite Things Knitwear with the lovely Camillia Fibers Som - and the unexpected happened…I ran out of yarn. Unfortunately I was using an older more green color of Som and I lost at yarn chicken with 1 ¼ sleeves to go. So sad. I will definitely be doing that sweater in Som again, but I did have to do some frogging! The Early Bloomer has an interesting construction - starting with a provisional cast on and delayed short rows and collar. It came out beautifully! Love the Som colors together - so soft and lovely!
Juice Sweater - Veronika Lindberg - I’ve always loved the Juice sweater and I had a whim - needed a travel knit (went on a staycation to the lovely Sanderling Inn) - and this was my first choice. I love this pattern! With the 8 raglans the fit is wonderful. I used the called for Sandnes Garn Sunday held with Sandnes Garn Tynn Silke Mohair. I would love to do this one again - I’d love it in a larger more slouchy size in a La Bien Aimee Cashmerino - it would be my go to weekend sweater!
Yet another wonderful pattern from Creabea! It’s a short sleeve/long sleeve cardigan all in one pattern. Great basic pattern!
FREE easy summer pattern. Need I say more!
A tee shirt with a twist. Still pretty simple design, with a little challenge on the small sleeves.
This was on my to do list last summer - I really would like to try this - reminds me of the Kylie Pullover I made for Jenna.
Simple tee in Ito Kinu. Need this in my wardrobe!
Beautiful Caitlin Hunter design. It looks like so many colors but really only uses two Spincycle colors. Might have to try it!
This is a great stash buster. PLEASE look at the picture without the hat and imagine this without the plaid pants! It’s really a beautiful sweater!
Yes this was from February, but I really love this one. A challenging sock with a little colorwork and a little pattern work…sounds like fun!
I have so many videos - I’m just going to list them and add commentary - I know these were my favorites and I left some out :). Enjoy!
I’m not doing much cooking these days (way too much on the plate :)), but this one is an oldie but goodie
One Flank Steak (size that fits your family)
3 tbs sugar or honey or sweetener of choice
3-4 cloves of chopped garlic
Marinate the steak in the above ingredients overnight in the frig. I like to put this in a zip lock bag, but make sure it is sealed well and the opening is higher than the bottom so it won’t leak in your frig.
You can cook this many ways—the easiest is in a 425 oven for 10-15 mins on each side depending on how rare you would like it and how big it is. You can broil it—watch it carefully for burning, you can grill it, or pan fry it.
You can also pre-slice and then marinate to bake a bulgogi type of steak or stir fry.
Great with rice, veg, salad, as a bowl, or in a sandwich.
Lots of changes are coming to Peaceful Making - we are growing quickly. Know that the Newsletter is a team effort, so getting this out weekly has become a challenge. We really want to make this happen, and we will try. Thank you so much for your patience with our delays.
Please welcome our new interns in the coming weeks. Bella, Edie, Isabelle, and Will will be arriving between 5/14-18. They will be in the store full time and we really look forward to having them in our Peaceful Making family!
